REAGENTS
- Acetic Acid: CH3COOH
- Ammonium Hydroxide: NH4OH
EXTRACTING SOLUTION
- Neutral 1N Ammonium Acetate
- Using a fume hood, add 57 mL glacial acetate acid to a 1000 mL beaker containing 500 mL of deionized water and mix well.
- Using a fume hood, add 69 mL of concentrated ammonium hydroxide.
- Adjust the volume to 900 mL with deionized water and mix well.
- Adjust the pH to 7.0 with 3M acetic acid or 3M ammonium hydroxide.
- Transfer to a 1 liter volumetric flask. Dilute to volume with deionized water and mix well.
EXTRACTING PROCEDURE
- Scoop 5 g soil (4.25 mL) into a 50 mL extraction bottle.
- Add 25 mL extracting solution.
- Shake for 5 minutes on a shaker at high speed. (200 oscillations per minute.)
- Filter using Whatman #1 paper.
- Analyze by either Inductively Coupled Plasma or by Atomic Absorption.
CALCULATION
ppm in extract × 10 = lbs/acre
