REAGENTS

  1. Acetic Acid: CH3COOH
  2. Ammonium Hydroxide: NH4OH

EXTRACTING SOLUTION

  1. Neutral 1N Ammonium Acetate
    1. Using a fume hood, add 57 mL glacial acetate acid to a 1000 mL beaker containing 500 mL of deionized water and mix well.
    2. Using a fume hood, add 69 mL of concentrated ammonium hydroxide.
    3. Adjust the volume to 900 mL with deionized water and mix well.
    4. Adjust the pH to 7.0 with 3M acetic acid or 3M ammonium hydroxide.
    5. Transfer to a 1 liter volumetric flask. Dilute to volume with deionized water and mix well.

EXTRACTING PROCEDURE

  1. Scoop 5 g soil (4.25 mL) into a 50 mL extraction bottle.
  2. Add 25 mL extracting solution.
  3. Shake for 5 minutes on a shaker at high speed. (200 oscillations per minute.)
  4. Filter using Whatman #1 paper.
  5. Analyze by either Inductively Coupled Plasma or by Atomic Absorption.

CALCULATION

ppm in extract × 10 = lbs/acre
